Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera evokes the spirits of Bach and Shakespeare, standing with the ancient folk traditions of traditional shamanistic Chinese Opera. Written for string quartet and pipa, the performers also play percussion, cymbals and stones, water and paper, invoking ‘a dialogue between past and future, nature and spirit.’
